Antique Jumbo Translucent Red Cylinder Tomato Beads (18x30mm)

A distinctive collectible strand of old Ethiopian trade beads, featuring exceptionally large cylinder-shaped red “tomato” beads interspersed with smaller translucent moon bead spacers. The tomato beads range from deep crimson and burgundy to warm red and reddish-orange, with characteristic variations in color, surface texture, shape, and wear. Measuring approximately 17–20mm long x 29–30mm in diameter, these large cylinder beads are a rare find and particularly hard to source in this substantial size. Ethiopia has a long history as a crossroads for trade, and glass beads reached the region for centuries through commercial networks connecting the Red Sea, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and other parts of Africa. Over time, imported beads became valued for personal adornment, exchange, and traditional use, and older examples remain collectible today for their history, distinctive forms, and individual character. The strand measures approximately 34 inches long, with the large red tomato beads separated by softly translucent moon beads that provide a striking contrast in scale and color. The large beads have approximately 5–7mm holes, accommodating heavier cords and making them suitable for unique beading projects, decorative applications, or display. An unusual and increasingly hard-to-find strand that will also appeal to collectors of African and historic trade beads. Expect irregularities, surface wear, pitting, and variations consistent with the character of older trade beads.
