Obsidian beads are cut from obsidian, a natural volcanic glass (Mohs hardness about 5–5.5) formed when silica-rich lava cools so quickly it doesn't form crystals. The result is a smooth, glassy stone, most often jet black, that takes a high mirror polish. Because it is a glass, obsidian can be knapped to an extremely sharp edge — a property used for tools and blades for thousands of years.
