Moonstone beads are cut from moonstone, a translucent feldspar (Mohs hardness about 6–6.5). Its signature is adularescence — a soft, floating glow that shifts across the surface as light scatters between microscopic mineral layers, giving the stone its moonlit, sometimes cat's-eye look.

Types of Moonstone Beads

White / rainbow moonstone — white with a blue or multicolored sheen (rainbow moonstone is technically a labradorite).
Blue moonstone — the most prized, with a vivid blue adularescence.

Opalite and frosted glass are sometimes sold as moonstone but lack true, directional adularescence.

‘Rainbow moonstone’ is technically labradorite, a closely related feldspar.
