From Beading DIYs to Fashion Week: The Creative Journey of @thestylefreed

From Beading DIYs to Fashion Week: The Creative Journey of @thestylefreed

In this edition of Designer Spotlight, we’re thrilled to highlight the bold creativity of Vanessa, the visionary artist behind @thestylefreed. Rooted in necessity and fueled by imagination, Vanessa’s DIY journey began when a move abroad reshaped her shopping habits and, in turn, her design philosophy. Known for her love of hats, headpieces, and accessories, her work is infused with personal flair, and an undeniable passion for beads and shells. Her designs have already gained international recognition, making waves during Denmark Fashion Week and being featured in Italian Vogue, The New York Times, NYT Style, Vogue USA, L'Officiel Brazil, and Vogue Scandinavia. Whether she’s weaving cowrie shells into a striking DIY hat or experimenting with bone beads and metal accents, Vanessa’s creations embody both storytelling and style.

How did you get into Clothing Design and DIY Projects?

Out of necessity…moving to Denmark changed a lot of my shopping choices and I had to get creative to avoid custom fees. (esp with buying hats)

What types of beads, charms, and materials are your favorite to work with?

I think my middle name may be “cowrie” lol. I love to work with cowrie shells (esp the big metal ones from @thebeadchest)…it’s a close tie between the Mala Bone Beads… I just love those.

Where can our readers purchase your designs and creations?

I’m the worst type of artist… I haven’t shared my work “yet”…and learning how to let go. But I do have a virtual waiting list for the day I do decide to open up for orders. www.stllm.com

What is your biggest design achievement so far?

Has to be the notorious “beaded wig cap”…it’s the one project that has humbled me as a creative…but also it is the one everyone requests. Some of my favorite fashion icons has inquired about the cap, and I’m so honored (but still not ready to share)
Who are some Designers, DIY Creators, and Artists that inspire your work?

I totally will also praise the creative efforts of Erykah Badu whose style is at the core of my daydreams. Other artists that inspire me are Lauryn Hill, Solange Knowles, and Tracee Ellis Ross. A designer that inspires me is my younger brother, Travis, who is the head of my production team for when I finally ready to share my art with the world.
