Obsidian forms when Lava from a volcano rapidly cools and mixes with other minerals in the ground or in water. It is most commonly found near the edges of lava flow and in areas where lava falls directly into the ocean. Each bead measures approximately 4 x 4mm with a hole size of approximately 1mm.
