A striking strand of large vintage Yoruba brass beads from Nigeria, distinguished by their substantial scale, weight, richly aged surfaces, and individually cast details. Each bead was made using traditional casting techniques, resulting in subtle variations in shape, texture, and decoration. The surfaces display a beautiful natural patina of age that gives the strand considerable character.
The beads range approximately 20–28mm long x 21–30mm in diameter, making them exceptionally substantial compared with most traditional brass beads. At approximately 40 inches long, the complete strand has considerable visual presence and weight. Because of its size, it is particularly well suited as a decorative or display object, although the beads may also be incorporated into oversized jewelry, sculptural work, or other creative projects.
Brass casting has a long and important history in Nigeria and throughout West Africa, where skilled metalworkers have produced jewelry, ceremonial objects, currency forms, and prestige objects for centuries. Among the Yoruba and neighboring cultures, cast metalwork developed into a highly accomplished artistic tradition. Traditional casting—often using variations of the lost-wax process—allowed artisans to create intricate patterns and textured surfaces such as those visible on many of these beads.
