A remarkable vintage strand of authentic snake vertebrae beads from Nigeria, made from natural bone. Measuring approximately 32 inches long, the individual vertebrae range from approximately 7–9 x 10–14mm. This older strand is distinguished by the remarkable uniformity of the vertebrae, smoother aged surfaces, and well-defined natural structure, giving it a noticeably different character from many newer snake-bone strands available today.
Snake vertebrae have a long history of use as beads and ornaments in West Africa, including Nigeria. Historical museum collections document Nigerian necklaces and other objects incorporating genuine snake vertebrae, and bead researchers note that the natural form was sufficiently valued that European beadmakers later produced glass imitations for the African trade. This strand originates from Nigeria and has since been restrung on traditional raffia by tradesmen in West Africa, preserving the classic presentation associated with African trade-bead strands.
A hard-to-find vintage example with beautiful natural detail, suitable for collectors, display, jewelry, or other creative applications. This is a unique, one-of-a-kind strand—you will receive the exact strand pictured. What you see is what you get.
