Ashanti saucer beads are made in Ghana: powdered glass is poured into a clay mold around a cassava stem, which burns away to leave the hole, and fired until the glass fuses, a method Ghanaian beadmakers have used since the 1600s. Seven matte colors stack into bold necklaces and bracelets, and the large, flat shape works well in home decor and mixed-media pieces.
