Idar Oberstein in West Germany rose to prominence during the early 19th century as a significant site for stone-cutting and bead-making. By the 1860s at least 56 stone mills were operating along the river Nahe. Skilled craftsman cut and polished stones imported from Brazil and other places to produce distinctive designs for trade in West Africa and other places. These beads have been highly sought after due to their unique shape and colors and are coveted by collectors and bead connoisseur alike.
