Designer Spotlight: Finding Balance in Beads with @highvibebeads 💖

Designer Spotlight: Finding Balance in Beads with @highvibebeads 💖

For our latest Designer Spotlight, we had the pleasure of chatting with Melissa Rodgers, the talented jewelry designer behind @highvibebeads on Instagram. Melissa’s journey into the world of jewelry making started unexpectedly, blossoming from a small batch of diffuser jewelry into a full-fledged business. Known for her vibrant use of gemstones, crystals, and meaningful designs, Melissa has captivated the attention of The Bead Chest community with her unique approach to creating beautiful and intentional jewelry pieces. In this interview, Melissa shares her creative process, her favorite materials, and what inspires her.

How did you get into jewelry making?

I love jewelry – looking at it, buying it, and especially wearing it – but I never thought about making it. That all changed about 7 years ago when my yoga studio’s manager asked me to create a new and different way to showcase our line of essential oils. My first thought was diffuser jewelry - a perfect way to enjoy essential oils on the go – so I taught myself the basics and beaded a small batch of mostly raw wood aromatherapy mala necklaces and bracelets. They sold out immediately and started me on my path to work with meaningful gemstones and crystals and expanded my reach beyond the yoga community. My business grew organically through word of mouth and sales in local retail stores. I still remember the day someone first asked for a business card, which of course I did not have. I realized I needed to get serious if this was to be more than a hobby. I designed a logo and business cards and eventually created a website with the help of my talented brother.

What kind of jewelry pieces are your favorite to make?

My favorite project is almost always the one I just finished (even more so if it was a custom order). My focus is mainly bracelets, and I most enjoy creating stacks of 3 or 5 bracelets using the play of color, texture and shape to create a vibe. I recently designed a beautiful custom stack for a plant-loving aromatherapist who wanted the lovely pinks and greens from her rose garden in bracelet form.

What types of beads are your favorite to work with?

I believe the magic is in the mix and love the variety of beads, pendants, and findings offered at www.thebeadchest.com. I often start with an interesting focal bead that allows me to build a visually compelling piece or stack with a balanced composition. From there, I might use Tribal beads for a boho vibe, brass and metal findings beads to add a touch of pretty, and handmade glass and carved beads to add texture to my designs.

Where can our followers purchase designs from you?

I am active on Instagram and Facebook @HighVibeBeads and sell my designs at www.HighVibeBeads.com.

What is your biggest jewelry design achievement?

I do not have a specific achievement that I am proud of, but I am pleased to have been recognized in designer spotlights and collaborations, and I am forever grateful to have many repeat customers.

Who are some jewelry designers that inspire you?

The best thing about social media is the opportunity to connect with a lovely tribe of creative souls. Sharing daily support and encouragement has been such a source of inspiration and motivation. With so many designers on Instagram who leave me feeling wonder and awe at their creativity and style, it is hard to name just a few! @Meredithwaterstraat_art, @coppercrownstudio, @weibertraum, and, @andriabieberdesigns.

Melissa’s story reminds us of the beauty of creating jewelry that resonates with both the maker and the wearer. Her passion for blending color, texture, and symbolism inspires her followers.
