Mud cloth — known in Mali as bogolan or bogolanfini — is a traditional handwoven cotton fabric, hand-dyed using fermented mud in a centuries-old technique passed down through generations of Malian artisans. Each cloth at The Bead Chest is authentic and handmade, with the bold geometric patterns and earthy tones that have made bogolan one of West Africa's most recognizable textiles.

What is bogolan mud cloth?

Bogolan begins as narrow strips of handwoven cotton, sewn together into a single cloth. Artisans paint designs using iron-rich mud that has been fermented for up to a year, along with plant dyes that react with the cotton to fix the color. The result is a durable, one-of-a-kind fabric in which the symbols and patterns carry cultural meaning — from protection and status to proverbs and history. Because each piece is made entirely by hand, no two mud cloths are exactly alike.

Ways to use mud cloth

Mud cloth is wonderfully versatile. Designers and decorators use it for throw pillows and cushion covers, upholstery, table runners, wall hangings, framed art, blankets, and bold fashion accents. Its natural cotton and hand-dyed finish pair beautifully with both modern and bohemian interiors.
