3-5 x 6-9mm bead, 2mm stringing hole
Checkout this beautiful strand of African sandcast. The process of making these beads is unique to Africa and has been used for over 1000 years. Pulverized glass of various colors is poured into a clay mold, using a cassava stem for the bead's hole. The mold is placed in a furnace and heated until the glass particles congeal without actually melting and the stem burns out. People of West Africa have been making beads in this manner since the 1600s. Beads are measure 4-7 mm in diameter. They may be somewhat irregular in shape for a more rustic look. Two strands shown in image however strands are sold individually. Each strand is unique and bead count is intended to be approximate.
