Product Details

Checkout this beautiful multicolored strand of African sandcast beads. The process of making these beads is unique to Africa and has been used for over 1000 years. Pulverized glass of various colors is poured into a clay mold, using a cassava stem for the bead's hole. The mold is placed in a furnace and heated until the glass particles congeal without actually melting and the stem burns out. The Ghananians have been making beads in this manner since the 1600s. Each bead measures approximately 3-15 x 6-9mm, with a hole size of approximately 2mm. You will receive one strand measuring approximately 38". There are around 100 beads on each strand. While most of the beads are believed to be vintage, there are some newer beads interspersed. Each strand is unique and may slightly vary from the pictured beads. Fascinating Beads

These beats are a bit smaller than many of the krobo beads. I normally work with. And the colors are very subdued. I believe I will enjoy working with these and integrating them into my Krobo bead necklaces. I might also use them with other beads. I think they offer many possibilities and I would definitely recommend them to designers who want to work with Something different.
